Self-Organization Models: A Guide to Holacracy, Agile, Podularity, and Teal

4. Teal

Teal organizations are characterized by self-management, wholeness, and evolutionary purpose. In a Teal organization, hierarchical roles are replaced by a system of distributed authority and decision-making. Employees are encouraged to bring their whole selves to work, integrating their personal and professional lives.

Teal organizations are also driven by an evolutionary purpose—rather than striving to meet predetermined goals, they adapt and grow organically, guided by the collective intelligence and intuition of their members.

As one of the four primary models of self-organization, Holacracy merits a closer examination. Holacracy creates a clear framework for distributed decision-making and accountability. It separates people from roles, allowing individuals to perform multiple roles and ensuring that authority is tied to the role, not the person.

Holacracy also introduces a unique meeting structure designed to facilitate decision-making and adaptability. The framework has two key meetings: tactical meetings, which focus on ongoing operational issues, and governance meetings, which address the roles, policies, and structure of the organization.
